Location Homewood Friends Meeting House 3107 N. Charles Street Baltimore, MD 21218
Time Begin gathering for pre-ritual activities at 6:30 (please not earlier, as we will still be setting up). Ritual begins promptly at 7
Intention We gather in community to build the light and speak the words that will guide our way.
About the Event This Imbolc, we welcome you to Baltimore Reclaiming's candle spell ritual, which has been going on for several years. This candle spell ritual is also a ritual about making a pledge dedicating yourself to something. This is a traditional holiday for this kind of work.
Before the ritual, you will want to think about the year ahead. What is something you want to work on in the upcoming year? Is there something to which you want to dedicate yourself? Is there a type of growth or an area of development you want to explore? As you settle on the intention, pledge, or dedication, for maximum clarity and effectiveness, you'll want to formulate your focus into a short, pithy phrase (no more than six words, and ideally three ) that can serve as power-packed seed.
The next step is to represent your dedication in imagery that speaks to all parts of your Self. You will bring to the ritual a candle decorated to represent the intention, pledge, or dedication you'll be making. Generally, we use 7 day candles -- the kind in glass jars -- with the glass painted, collaged, written on, glittered, etc., but you may bring any kind of candle you like that represents your working (please no scented candles)
In sacred space, we will each speak our dedication, pledge or intention to be witnessed and affirmed and celebrated by the group, and light our candles. Then we'll build a container of energy to empower all of the workings. At the end of the ritual, we'll blow out the candles, take them home, and relight them to finish the spell. Some folks burn them all at once, over the next seven days to seal the spell. Others burn them throughout the year, as they work with their intentions.
Don't have a candle? Have a candle, but no time to decorate it? Don't worry! You are welcome to come and speak a pledge! We will have small tealights available for you to light and speak your pledge!

At the Summer 2017 Community Meeting, Baltimore Reclaiming committed to a nine month working exploring the power of the major arcana of the tarot. We will step forward willingly to engage with powerful figures like the High Priestess, the Hermit, the Hierophant, Strength, Justice, the Star, the Tower, and more. This ritual arc begins at Lammas 2017 and continues until Beltane 2018. Participants are welcome to join at any point during this 7 ritual arc.
Ritual Intention: We are Witches. Rooted in our wildness, we become the poison that heals.
“Who then, is the Devil...The Devil is not the hidden hand of history, but has been formed by the glove it wears. The Devil then is the operation of wild nature, seemingly as distant from us as any Morning Star, but as closely bound to us as our own shadow. The Devil is a sign that She is also here, as the path into the hidden wood the Devil indicates and down which the witch must walk.” Peter Grey, Apocalyptic Witchcraft
A witch’s tools are many. She may wield a knife, grasp a cup, stir a cauldron, or sweep a broom.
But greatest and most precious among these is her discernment, the sharpest tool to her hand. The witch’s discerning eye cuts through falsehood, illusion, and deceit. She will not be controlled or dominated but remains wild; her connection to the land, spirits, and the ancestors fuels her resistance.
This is why the Witch has been painted a figure of terror. This is why she has been partnered with the Devil and stands accused of meeting him in the deep woods for ecstatic sabbats. The witch may not be permitted to face the amassed power of the State, refuse to comply, and survive. She may not be permitted to become a beacon of resistance to the oppressed. This is an unacceptable possibility for the forces who exercise Power-over. The witch must stand accused. The witch must burn.
Or, she can choose irrelevance. Become harmless. A laughable figure. As she hands over her subversive power she wins the prize of four feet of shelf space at Barnes and Noble. She can choose, if she wishes, to go into partnership with empire and institutions of power, to participate in the commodification of her ancestral allies and the exploitation of her archetype, even launching her own lifestyle brand carried at trendy boutique stories in gentrified neighborhoods where the spirits of the displaced still wander looking for their destroyed altars.
This is a ritual for the Witch who chooses otherwise.
It’s time to remember your wildness. We call for you to come with us, to walk down the “path into the hidden wood” indicated by the Devil. To seek what lies beyond the caricature found on the tarot card. Come with us, as we explore the lush reality of this tender darkness, as we interact with gods and goddesses whose form has been hidden beyond that of the Devil. In that place, we will sharpen our Witch’s Eye, our tool of discernment, and remember that which frees us from compliance and subservience. As we approach the Winter Solstice, the time of longest night, we become ready to move forward, reawakened as the poison that heals.
This ritual is a continuation of our year working with the Major Arcana. In planning this ritual, we were inspired by themes present in the following cards: The Emperor, the Hierophant, the Devil, Judgement, and the Chariot. Location Ruscombe Mansion 4803 Yellowwood Ave, Baltimore, MD 21209
Location Homewood Friends Meeting House 3107 N. Charles Street Baltimore, MD 21218
Time Begin gathering at 6:30 (please not earlier, as we will still be setting up) for pre-ritual activities, including building the Ancestor Altar, the traditional Samhain tarot card pull, and more! Ritual begins promptly at 7
Intention Lightning strikes. We see things for what they are. With the help of the ancestors, we craft our response.
About the Event The Tower should warn the people not to believe in it... It should be as a lighthouse, in a dangerous place where men have often been wrecked and where ships should not go. P.D. Ouspensky
As the story goes… “The building of the tower was begun… in order to have a constant reminder of the teaching that the true tower must be built in one’s own soul… But by and by the disciples forgot what the tower symbolizes, and began to believe in the tower of stone they had built, and to teach others to so believe. They began to say that in this tower there is power, mystery, and… that the tower itself is holy."
To say we are living in Tower Times is to say that we are living in an age when the institutions, systems, and social agreements that once seemed reliable and effective are crumbling and spiraling into chaos. A moment of illumination, a shock of insight reveals that the Tower is built on false premises. Under the weight of this revelation, the Tower cannot stand. Down it must come.
How do we survive the fall of the Tower? In this co-created, participatory ritual, we will examine the moments of illumination that have led to the destructions of all kinds of Towers: ones both personal & internal, and those whose fall we experience collectively. We build our lives on all kinds of false premises; that the people we love won’t hurt us, that the election will go the way we want, that the insanity of climate chaos will somehow be addressed. When these Towers fall, and we see things for what they are, how do we learn to be the kind of people who can carry the power of clear vision not as a curse but as a gift? Is it possible that, like the Magician of the Major Arcana, we can act as a channel for illumination and guide that energy towards transformation and healing?
The secret is, we’ve done this before. The answer is encoded in our ancestral memory and our mitochondrial DNA. It’s written in our myths, sagas, and history books. The Tower has fallen before, and it will fall again. The Ancestors, be they of blood or spirit, whether their names are known or lost to pre-history, have stories to tell us about how to live, love, resist, and evolve in times of great chaos, challenge, and fear. On this night, during Samhain-tide when the veils between our world and the world of the Dead are thin, we will open ourselves as channels to the Ancestors to hear these stories, and share them with each other, as we craft a spell of resistance to take out into the world.
A word about working with Ancestors: For many people, working with Ancestors of blood/lineage can be difficult. This might be because you don’t know who your Ancestors of blood are, or because you don’t like your Ancestors of blood. That’s okay! We encourage a generous and wide view of the term “Ancestors”. Ancestors can be people whom you particularly admire (Ancestor Heroes or Ancestors of Liberation), people who were influential in a spiritual tradition you are a member of (Ancestors of Spirit), people who you loved (Beloved Dead), or Ancestors who were particularly influential in a field you are involved in (Ancestors of Art/Ancestors of Dance/Ancestors of Law/Ancestors of Philosophy, etc). If at any point in working with Ancestors starts to feel like too much, just center by getting something to drink, patting your body down, and asking someone to have a conversation with you.
During this ritual, we will be working with the energies of the tarot cards the Moon, the Tower, Death, and the Magician. (See below for more information on our work with the Tarot this year).

Intention & About the Event Intention: Gathering together during a time of great change, we turn towards the center of community.
For many of us, the world feels particularly topsy-turvy right now. Life is full of unknowns, uncertainties, mysteries grand and small. As we ride the Wheel of Fortune towards destiny, the ride can sometimes be bumpy. Being in community is one of the ways we can orient ourselves in the middle of the many ups and downs we will inevitably experience as we walk our path. For some of us, being at the center of community is easy. Others find it more comfortable to stay at the edges. Neither one of these is the "right" way.
On or near the Autumn Equinox, Baltimore Reclaiming traditionally skips an elaborate ritual in favor of a community building event. During this potluck picnic and sunset watching, we will turn into the center of our community - each other, with an event focused on building relationship. We honor Community as one of the things that can anchor us, and lend us a sense of stability and continuity through a time of great change. On this day we invite you to move in just a little closer. As the Wheel of Fortune spins, we find that the ride is less bumpy the closer you are to the center...
During this event we invite you to work with the energies of the tarot cards the Wheel of Fortune and The World. (See below for more information on our work with the Tarot this year).
Sunset Viewing This event traditionally includes a group sunset viewing. This year, we have chosen to rent a pavilion which means we are in the park as an "official permitted group." The park informs me that all permitted events MUST end by six. This means our official event WILL conclude by six. Reclaiming believes that all people are their own spiritual authority. To that end.... Past experience has taught us that the sun generally begins to dip below the trees in the park around 6 o’clock. Sunset on this day is a little after 7, and that is when the park officially closes. It may so happen that at the potluck picnic some renegade anarchists make a plan for sunset viewing as loosely affiliated individuals who sit near each other.
Parking We recommend parking at the Falls Road MTA Light Rail Stop and taking the boardwalk path through the woods into the park. The address is 2 Railroad Avenue, Baltimore MD 21209.
To bring Please bring food and drinks to share with others. There is a charcoal grill at the pavilion that can be used. Please bring instruments to play music (guitars, drums, shakers, etc. No amplification). Please bring tarot cards if you wish to give readings. Please invite children and partners!
Lammas Gather at 6:30 pm, ritual begins at 7:00 AsanaRoots, 1707 N. Charles Street (2nd Floor). Wheelchair accessible location
Intention: We meet the Fool and prepare for the journey ahead.
“...We might describe the Fool as that within us which does not stop or get caught...this is that concept of being free, of being nothing...We so easily make the mistake of believing we are this thing or that thing. If I am creative, I am the Magician. If I am a boss, then I am the Emperor. If I feel trapped in some obsessive or abusive relationship, then the Devil controls me. The Fool is the vital and necessary answer to all this identification. Youare not that. You are free.” Rachel Pollack, Tarot Wisdom
“Emergence notices the way small actions and connections create complex systems, patterns that become ecosystems and societies. Emergence is our inheritance as a part of this universe; it is how we change. Emergent strategy is how we intentionally change in ways that grow our capacity to embody the just and liberated worlds we long for.” adrienne maree brown, Emergent Strategy
What does it take to become a world-changer? The belief that we could, with our collective will and work and vision, make a difference. Some call this foolish, and point to the overwhelming power of capitalism, of Empire, of white supremacy, and say that our dreaming hearts don’t stand a chance.
The dream of the Fool is more than a pretty dream. To step off the beaten path, to take only what is essential, to leap into the unknown… This is an awakening of our emergence. Our emergence as the change-makers who will weave the spells that will craft the magic that has the power to reshape the world. The emergence of our power as collective beings, as webs and networks of magic-makers and shapeshifters and visionaries.
As the Fool, we decide to look at the world with new sight. We choose to open our hearts to the world, to be moved by it and seduced by it. To fall in love with it. To come into relationship with it.
In this ritual, we will call forth the wisdom and power of the Fool and dance through the Tarot. We will open to the Major Arcana as we prepare for the Fool’s Journey. Let the riddles of the Magician come forth! Welcome to the whispers of the Hermit. Take heed of the arcane knowledge of the High Priestess, and the warnings of Justice. Hear the message of Temperance, and the mutterings of the Devil. Let the trumpets of Judgement come forth, and hear the singing of The World. Let them all be welcome as we receive their visions and record the oracle.
Join us, as we take these steps of reconciliation and (r)evolution. Come with your Foolish hearts, and freedom-loving feet, and help us set a new path. Our journey begins.
Please bring an item that represents something you will take on your Fool's Journey. This can be a skill, a quality, a talent, your allies - anything that feels particularly important to have along as you step into the unknown. We will use these items to build a shared altar. You will take this item back home with you. We will be doing a working in solidarity with the Baltimore Ceasefire prior to the ritual. Please bring a piece of nature from your home or favorite spot in the city. This could be a blade of grass, a leaf, a rock, a vial of water, some soil, etc. We will be building an altar to our city and adding our strength to the spell of peace and restoration that is being woven.
